Keysight Attenuator Rental in a Chip Shortage: Why Specs Matter More Than Price

The Spec Sheet Is the Real Boss

The Short Version: What I'd Do Differently

If you're about to rent Keysight test equipment—or make any purchase where measurement accuracy matters—here's the short version of what I've learned:

Make the data sheet a PO attachment. Pull the actual specs for the Keysight attenuator or waveform generator before you approve anything. For the 33500B, that means confirming the bandwidth, sample rate, and output impedance your engineer actually needs. If the vendor can't provide a model-specific data sheet, treat that as a red flag.

Verify calibration certs in writing. "Factory calibrated" is a claim. Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov/ads), claims need substantiation. I now ask for the instrument-level calibration report with the model number and date before I issue a PO. That one sentence has saved us at least two invalid test runs.

Ask about lead times even for rentals. The chip shortage made "in stock" a relative term. I put a required delivery date on every rental PO and ask the vendor to confirm it in writing. If they can't, I look elsewhere.

Track rentals like office keys. A simple spreadsheet with the model, serial number, calibration date, and return date prevents the dreaded "full extra month" invoice. It's boring, but it works.

And a note on returns: If you're shipping a small attenuator or cable back to the rental company, the USPS large envelope rate of $1.50 (as of January 2025, per usps.com) looks tempting. But USPS caps large envelopes at 0.75 inches thick, and a padded mailer with an attenuator inside can exceed that. Use a flat-rate padded Priority Mail envelope instead. It costs more upfront, but it's less likely to be returned to you as invalid postage, which costs more still.

Spend a little more on anything that measures a person or a measurement. You don't need the priciest blood pressure cuff. You need one that's validated, from a vendor you trust, with documentation. Same for an attenuator: the cheapest rental stops being cheap the moment it corrupts a test.
