If you're trying to pick the right test instrument for your company, you'll probably run into the same three names over and over: Keysight, Keysight, and... well, the 117 multimeter isn't exactly a Keysight product, but it keeps showing up in the same conversations. I've spent years coordinating rush equipment orders, and I've lost track of how many “emergency instrument” calls start with someone on the other end saying, “We need something that can measure everything.”

Here's what I've learned: an instrument that measures everything usually ends up being the wrong thing for what you actually need. So let's compare the Keysight impedance analyzer, the MXA Keysight signal analyzer, and the 117 multimeter on the things that matter in real projects: measurement type, speed, frequency range, calibration, and the message it sends to your clients.

What are you actually measuring?

The first and most obvious difference is what each instrument does. The Keysight impedance analyzer measures complex impedance over a range of frequencies. If you're testing capacitors, inductors, resonators, or filters, this is the instrument that gives you the curves you can't get from a multimeter.

The MXA Keysight signal analyzer does something completely different. It looks at RF signals in the frequency domain. It tells you what's in the spectrum: carrier frequency, modulation quality, harmonics, interference. If your company works on wireless products, radar, or EMC, this is the tool.

The 117 multimeter, on the other hand, measures voltage, current, and resistance. That sounds almost too simple, but it's exactly what you need for quick troubleshooting. I've never once heard somebody say, “I need an impedance analyzer to check whether this outlet is live.” No—you grab the 117.

So the first comparison conclusion is: there is no all-in-one. Each one wins in its own domain.

Speed and workflow on a real deadline

When a client calls on a Monday morning and says a critical part of their test setup just died, you don't have time to become an expert. In my experience, the best choice is the one that gives you an answer fastest.

The 117 multimeter is immediately out of the bag and ready to use. Turn it on, probe, read. Ten seconds. If the problem is a missing voltage, it's done.

The MXA Keysight signal analyzer takes longer. It needs to warm up, lock onto a reference, and you need to set the span and bandwidth before you can make sense of anything. Usually 10–15 minutes if you're experienced. But that's almost nothing compared to the time you'll save when you actually see the bad signal instead of guessing at it.

The Keysight impedance analyzer is the least agile. You need a test fixture, calibration data, and a stable bench. You can't wave it at a board in the field. That's not a flaw—it's a lab instrument—but it matters if you're buying for a crew that needs results in the next hour.

So, speed winner: the 117, by a mile. But speed alone doesn't make a measurement right.

Frequency range and the limits of each approach

This is the dimension that surprises people. The MXA Keysight signal analyzer can go up to tens of gigahertz—many configurations reach 26.5 GHz, and options can push beyond that. It can see 5G NR, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and any other over-the-air signal your company might encounter.

The Keysight impedance analyzer is lower in frequency, usually in the kilohertz to low-megahertz range, depending on the model. That's perfect for characterizing a quartz crystal or a power inductor, but meaningless if you're trying to validate a mmWave antenna.

The 117 multimeter mostly works at DC and low-frequency AC. It can measure a 9V battery or a 50/60 Hz wall outlet, but it's not going to show you anything about a 2.4 GHz transmission.

This is the deal-breaker dimension. Once you look at frequency range, you'll quickly cross off at least one of these options.

Calibration, traceability, and the hidden cost of inaccuracy

One thing that only shows up after the purchase is calibration. A good instrument is only as good as its last calibration. For a company that works under ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 17025, you need documented, NIST-traceable calibration records for everything in your test equipment list.

The 117 multimeter is cheap and easy to calibrate. You can send it out, get it back in a week, and move on. The MXA is a different story—calibration can be much more expensive, especially if it has options for phase noise or advanced signal analysis. The Keysight impedance analyzer may also need calibration standards matching the components you're measuring, which is an extra cost people often forget.

A quick story: in 2022, I almost bought a used analyzer that looked like a bargain on paper. Then the seller admitted the calibration certificate was two years expired. By the time I factored in the cost of recalibration, the “discount” had disappeared. That's the kind of hidden detail that can bite you.

What your equipment says about your standards

I don't want to overstate this, but the quality of your test equipment is part of your brand image. If a customer visits your lab and sees an instrument from an unknown brand, their trust doesn't exactly skyrocket. If they see a Keysight impedance analyzer or an MXA Keysight signal analyzer sitting on the bench, it signals that you take measurements seriously.

  • RF or wireless testing company? Buy the MXA Keysight signal analyzer. It's the only one that can verify a 5G signal or track down an intermittent interference problem. This is where you'll want to spend the real budget.
  • Component design, sensor evaluation, or crystal oscillator characterization? Buy the Keysight impedance analyzer. The impedance curve is exactly what your team needs, and a cheaper substitute will just make your engineers unhappy.
  • General electrical troubleshooting and installation work? Buy the 117 multimeter. It's reliable, it's portable, and it covers 80% of the day-to-day issues you'll encounter.

One more example. I once had a customer call me because they wanted to know how to unlock a phone for lab testing. They'd just unlocked a GSM handset with a carrier and needed to verify it was actually transmitting on the expected bands. That's not a binary question, and it's not something you can answer with a multimeter. We brought an MXA, measured the transmit spectrum, and confirmed the unlock had worked. Without the right instrument, it would have been pure guesswork.

So, bottom line: don't just ask whether it's a Keysight product or not. Ask what problem you're solving this week, what frequency you're working at, how fast you need to respond, and what your customers will expect from you. If you do that, the right instrument is easier to pick than you think.

As of January 2025, these categories and approximate price points are accurate enough for budgeting—but the market moves quickly, so verify current specs, calibration costs, and lead times before you send the PO out.
